Eudaimonia — usually translated as happiness, but more accurately as human flourishing — is Aristotle's term for the highest good, the proper end of all human activity. It is not pleasure. It is not wealth. It is not fame or power. It is the full exercise of distinctively human capacities in accordance with virtue, over a complete life.
The distinction from pleasure matters enormously. Pleasure is a feeling — it comes and goes, depends on external circumstances, and can be produced by things that are bad for the person who experiences them. Eudaimonia is a quality of life — the kind of life that is genuinely good for the person living it, that expresses their capacities at full depth, that is built on virtue and sustained by genuine relationships and meaningful work. You can have a pleasurable life that is not eudaimon, and a difficult life that is.
Aristotle's account of the virtues is built on eudaimonia as its foundation: virtues are the stable character traits that enable a person to live and act well. Courage, justice, practical wisdom, temperance — these are not rules imposed from outside but the qualities that, when exercised consistently, constitute a flourishing human life. The person who lacks them is not merely morally deficient; they are living below what a human life can be.
The concept has proved remarkably durable because it captures something that hedonistic accounts of happiness miss: the difference between enjoying your life and living it well, between feeling satisfied and actually flourishing, between the happiness that can be faked and the one that cannot. Abraham Maslow's self-actualization is its twentieth-century psychological equivalent. Hill's achievement philosophy is its practical American expression. All of them are attempts to articulate the same insight: that human beings have a characteristic excellence, and that the good life consists in developing and expressing it.
