Self-transcendence is Abraham Maslow's final and most important revision to his hierarchy of needs — the level he added above self-actualization in his later work, and which he came to regard as the most distinctively human of all human capacities. Where self-actualization is the full development of one's own potential, self-transcendence is the movement beyond concern for one's own development toward concern for others, for a cause, for something larger than the self.
Viktor Frankl reached the same conclusion from a different direction: the person who pursues happiness directly usually misses it; the person who forgets themselves in service to a cause or a person tends to find happiness arriving as a byproduct of the forgetting. Self-consciousness — the chronic preoccupation with one's own wellbeing, progress, and satisfaction — is itself a source of misery that is dissolved not by more self-improvement but by genuine engagement with something beyond the self.
This teaching is universal. Every major philosophical and religious tradition places it at the apex of human development. Confucius's ren — benevolence — is precisely this: the extension of genuine care beyond the boundaries of the self into genuine care for others. The Ubuntu philosophy — I am because we are — is a structural claim about the same reality. Desmond Tutu's insistence that my humanity is bound up in yours is an ethical formulation of the same insight that Frankl and Maslow are making psychologically.
The paradox of self-transcendence is that it represents the fullest possible realization of the self — not its negation. The person who has moved beyond preoccupation with their own advancement, who gives freely without calculating return, who serves a cause larger than their own interests, is more fully human, not less. The self that has transcended its own preoccupation with itself has, in doing so, become more completely what a self can be.
