Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, in 1817 — Emerson's neighbor, protégé, and eventually his own considerably more radical version of the Transcendentalist ideal. He graduated from Harvard in 1837, during a severe economic depression, and deliberately chose not to pursue a conventional career. He taught school, worked in his family's pencil factory, and spent as much time as possible outdoors — walking, observing, filling journals that would eventually total two million words.

In 1845, at age twenty-seven, he borrowed an axe from Emerson, walked to a piece of Emerson's land at Walden Pond, built a one-room cabin with his own hands, and moved in on July 4th — Independence Day, deliberately chosen. He stayed for two years, two months, and two days. His total cost of living for the first eight months was twenty-eight dollars and twelve cents. He calculated this precisely because he wanted to know exactly what was required to sustain a human life, and therefore how much time he needed to spend earning money versus how much he was free to spend on things that actually mattered to him.

He was not a hermit. He walked into Concord regularly, had visitors, dined with his mother on Sundays. The experiment was not about isolation. It was about simplicity: stripping away everything nonessential to discover what actually was essential — and then living according to that discovery.

Walden is simultaneously a practical account of an experiment in simple living and a philosophical argument about what a life well spent actually requires. The practical account is scrupulously detailed — exact costs, exact yields, exact measurements of effort and result. The philosophical argument is more subversive: most people, Thoreau observes, lead lives of quiet desperation — trapped in habits of work and consumption they have never examined, spending their irreplaceable time on activities that produce nothing of lasting value.

His remedy is not poverty but deliberateness. Simplify, simplify — not as an aesthetic preference but as an epistemological practice. Until you have cleared away the unnecessary, you cannot see clearly what actually matters. The person who chooses their life consciously, who knows exactly what they are trading their time for and has decided it is worth the trade, is free in a way that the person who simply follows the conventional path is not.

Civil Disobedience, written after a night in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax that supported slavery and the Mexican War, extends the argument into political life. The individual conscience has a higher authority than the law. When they conflict, the person of integrity must follow conscience — and accept the legal consequences. Gandhi read it and built a movement on it. Martin Luther King read it and quoted it. It is the philosophical foundation of every principled act of nonviolent resistance that followed.

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears.
